The amazing benefits of learning music!

Learning to play guitar – the benefits…whatever your age! (2 min read)

Playing guitar is awesome and is something we’ve been passionate about for a long time. The importance of extra -curricular activities such as learning to play a musical instrument are well documented, but it’s not just for kids. Whatever your age there are numerous benefits (some surprising!) of picking up a guitar and signing up for lessons. Here are just a few…

Physical benefits

Your guitar teacher will encourage you to maintain good posture and hold your guitar correctly during your lessons. This should get you in the habit of doing it at home and increase your awareness of the benefits of good posture.

You can’t help but switch off from everyday life while concentrating on that cool new song or riff, allowing you to become more mindful. This can positively affect relaxation as well as concentration and in turn reduces stress levels.

It makes you smarter!

Studies show a link between musical training and academic success, in both children and adults. Learning to play guitar stimulates the brain in numerous ways: improving development and functions such as memory, abstract reasoning skills, coordination, reaction times and multitasking. Not bad eh?

Emotional benefits

The emotional benefits of playing guitar are huge. Taking part in regular group lessons encourages you to meet new people and work alongside them in a fun, relaxed environment as well as feeling a sense of achievement and increasing your confidence by finally nailing that tricky chord or riff you’ve been working on.

Surprising benefits

Learning to play guitar will hopefully inspire you to create your own music. According to research, making music “enhances the immunological response, which enables us to fight viruses”. Finding time to regularly practice guitar requires you to develop better time management and organisation skills, helping you in turn to manage your busy school, work or retirement schedule.

Lastly, it's fun!

Whether you’re a beginner or looking to pursue your dream of performing professionally, here at Altrincham Guitar School, we eat, sleep and breath music and have a range of lessons for you to choose from.
